Accuracy of fuel gauge

Both the trip computer and fuel gauge seem to be of particular poor quality on the GT. The fuel warning light comes on with about 70km left on the trip computer, but even when running it down to 0km its impossible to fill more than 20 liters. What happened to the reported 24 liter capacity? Or does the reserve start when everything (both trip computer and gauge) is at 0?!
Then the trip computer range indication is a joke. With a full tank it suggests that you can drive over 500km... only 150km further that has miraculously shrunk to about 150km. Even when driving on the highway with cruisecontrol on its indication is completely useless.
And BMW wanted 200 euro for that feature
Anybody have similar problems or does mine have a fault?
Nan

This has already been discussed in an earlier thread. I think someone has the suggested to do a multiple reset of the BC. Could be Jörgi but I'm not sure. My autonomy with the 5.8 software was about 385 KM and I was at zero km. I have not yet filled up the bike since updating to the 7.0 version. What version of the engine management software are you running ?

I agree, based on my own observations and calibration tests, this feature seems to stay on th e very save side. I was told by my :D that the behaviour of the fuel gauge is programmable. To what extend exactly I don't know and I have decided to leave mine the way it is, because I now know how it works and what it really means in terms of milage left. I also always use trip counter 1 for controll, meaning I always reset it when I fill up. And as dicussed before, I also always reset the calculator for km/Ltr and Km/h.

I topped up my bike today with 21 liters. I had about 50 KM remaining distance. It was the first time since I had a hole drilled in the tank neck and definitely is MUCH easier to fill up. Showing remaining distance is about 4OO KM.

Hi Caratz,
Can you take a picture of the filler neck with extra holes? Had mine out last weekend, seems rather straight forward to drill extra or slightly bigger holes?
Thanks,
Nan

I only had a single one drilled. My wife's off to Barcelona with the digital. Please remind me in a PM on Monday, I'll shoot a pic and send it over.

Caratz,

No need to shoot a picture. There's a topic on this subject on the other German site, with a clear picture.

BTW, how is the Achilles tendon?

Hello,

I have the same idea. The accuracy is BC-fuel use + 10 %. So 5.5 BC is 6.0 in practice.

The reason why the BC counts to zero, and there is still fuel in the tank, has to do with the fuel pump. There is a fuel pump in the tank, and it needs fuel to work. So driving the tank total empty is no good for your fuel pump!
