There are some subtle differences between the K1200S and the K1300S, mostly where the K1300S is said to handle significantly better. Looking at the specs, the K1200S has a trail/rake of 112mm/61 degrees, whereas the K1300S has trail/rake of 104mm/60.4 degrees. That is significant enough to completely change the handling of the bike.
Browsing through the parts fiche, the suspicion of what has been floating around in various places was confirmed: the only (chassis) difference between the K1200S and the K1300S is a different lower triangle of the Duolever fork. All the other parts of the entire front are identical, up to and including the part numbers. This is good news, since this part is reasonably cheap and together with the different size rear tire (that I already have, recommended!), should make a K1200S handle identical to a K1300S. Bonus is that the K1300S triangle puts in 1kg less of unsprung weight, which should make the suspension just a little bit more compliant with a little bit more feedback.
On a side note, for K1300S owners: I also noted another difference between the two models and that's the cams. Surpisingly, the K1200S cams are hotter than the K1300S cams. The 1300 cams have 256 degrees of opening, whereas the old 1200 cams have 268 degrees of opening. This might be something nice to investigate for someone wanting to up the oomph of their 1300.
